Adam & Eve
by Katy Bentz
For the sake of my mental health and self esteem I have found a way to be the executive director of Middle Women and not have internet in my home. Thomas Webber (my fiance) and I have chosen to isolate ourselves from today’s endless onslaught of media aimed to diminish us and have instead dedicated our energy to the creation and propagation of alternative media. Why? I am concerned for my safety and the safety of future children. The messages we are being told through today’s media, the systems that we are participating in, and the products we are consuming all show drastic signs of decay and deceit. Both our physical and mental health are at risk and I would like to see tremendous energy being directed at finding solutions for these problems. Imagine what the world will be like after solutions are successfully implemented. For that very reason we decided to share this photo story with you. The Middle Women team believes that humanity has forgotten what humans can look like and in the process our self esteem has been sacrificed. You would never know the glorious and intricate diversity of us all by looking on the pages of current main-stream media. With the Adam and Eve shoot, we want to reset some expectations. Thomas’ statement when first seeing the images sums it up clearly. “We look so real.” I think we need some real right now. It’s time for a big change and I think this photo shoot is a great start. Remember, we are naked in these photos so use discretion when you're looking at them and don't feel obligated to look if it’s going to make you uncomfortable. Our intention is to cultivate self esteem and promote positive body image. Rebecca Rivero Founder & Executive Director November 2014 |
